A Secret Playground: Nature Exploration Park
We found a SECRET PLAYGROUND!! I shouldn’t be sharing all of our secret places, but this is one too cool not to share. There were no slides, no swings, no rubber surfacing, (and no bathrooms ;)…only logs to cross, rocks to climb, pinecones to throw and bamboo sticks & palm fronds to build with. This is the Nature Exploration Park at Morley Field. It was developed to help kids reconnect with nature through exploration, building and creative play with natural elements. Everything was free and repurposed to create this park. The logs were salvaged from a storm that had knocked down trees in other city parks, boulders were used from a decommissioned beach project and sand was brought in from an old playground.
You’ll find it south of the Balboa Park Tennis Club at Morley Field, right next to Florida Canyon and the Morley Field Dog Park. Walk up the trail past the dog park and look to your right through the trees. (See pic below for what the paved trail looks like, follow this trail and then look up to the right through the trees.)
There were no bathrooms right there, but on the map it looks like you can keep walking and you’ll end up at the Morley Field Playground; which does have bathrooms, slides and swings.
