Wonderspaces in San Diego

Sometimes art installations and kids don't mix very well. I wasn't really sure if I should bring my toddler boys to this eclectic pop-up art exhibit at Wonderspaces. But I really wanted to go and at the very worst, I figured I'd just leave if they didn't behave. Luckily, my kids LOVED it! The "Bodypaint" exhibit (above) splashes neon colors on the wall as you move, jump & spin. We spent an hour here and about 30 minutes in the Squidsoup art exhibit (below) alone!

Wonderspaces is only a temporary art exhibit here for the summer in San Diego and then it moves to Austin, TX for the Fall. So get your tickets while it's here and check it out. And bring your kids!

Details are below to help you plan and enjoy your visit. Have fun!!

WHAT:

Artists from around the world create unique & extraordinary artwork in this pop-up traveling art experience. They pop-up in new cities across the country and you don’t want to miss it! Next stop: Austin, TX this Fall 2018.

WHERE:

Downtown San Diego at the Embarcadero, between the Star of India and the USS Midway. It's on the B Street Pier at: 1140 N Harbor Dr., San Diego, CA 92101

TICKETS:

Tickets are available online and they’re sold out for the next 3 weekends!, but weekdays are still available and through the end of July. They are timed tickets so you have to show up exactly at the time you choose, that way it’s not crowded and you can enjoy the experience.

COST:

$24/adult; $20/students, seniors 60+ and Military; $14/kids 3-12; FREE for kids under 3.

KIDS:

This was so much fun for my kids (3 & 5)! But no touching most of the exhibits. It is stroller friendly and there’s plenty of room for them and to park them inside too.

BATHROOMS:

Yes there are bathrooms inside this event, with a ramp for strollers too.

FOOD:

They have a snack bar inside the exhibit for drinks and light snacks; and a drink vending machine outside that my kids loved almost as much as the exhibits.

PARKING:

We parked in the metered parking lot right in front; which has a 3 hour limit. This was plenty of time for us as we spent an hour inside the exhibit AND we even walked over to the Waterfront Park for an hour to splash and play. There are also pay lots nearby. Meters and pay lots accept cards.

WHAT’S NEARBY:

Here are some other kid-friendly spots nearby that you can walk to. You may want to bring a stroller depending how far your kids can walk. We left our stroller in the car while we went into the Wonderspaces exhibit and then got the stroller out of the car on our way over to the Waterfront Park.

(1) Waterfront Park: 7 min walk, 2 blocks north. Playground and the splash park. There are bathrooms and a snack bar, but little shade so bring hats, sunscreen & water!

(2) Maritime Museum: 5 min walk, 1.5 blocks north on the waterfront. You can board the Star of India sailing ship, a submarine and other sailing fleet. Some even take passengers out for a ride. (Note: It will be closed Monday 6/18/18 for 1 week to upgrade the dock.)

(3) USS Midway Museum: 6 min walk, 2 blocks south on the waterfront. This is one of my kids’ favorite places!

(4) Seaport Village: 13 min walk, 5 blocks south on the waterfront. Lots of shops and restaurants and a carousel to ride.

(5) New Children’s Museum: 20 min walk, 1 mile southeast. Great place for kids to create and play! Bathrooms and a kid-friendly restaurant on-site.

MORE PICS from our visit:

Post-It wall: grab a pen from the bucket and write messages on the post-its!

These are made from construction paper. I wonder if my kids can make this in preschool next week?!

These balls sense you walking by and as you stand in front of them, they levitate up the tubes on their own. Just noticing that my 3yo on his tippy toes is almost as tall as my 5yo!

"But how do these balloons stay up?" Good question!
